The Law Commission Review

Join our policy team on Tuesday 28 November to discuss strategic objectives relating to the Law Commission's ongoing review.

Following the announcement by Andrew Griffith MP at Co-op Congress, the Law Commission has begun reviewing the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 and Friendly Societies Act 1992.

Alongside our retail co-operative society members, infrastructure bodies and federal members, we've been campaigning for fundamental change in legislation for some time. The UK’s current co-operative legal framework is limiting, costing the sector millions of pounds a year in unnecessary time, expenditure, inefficiency and missed opportunities.

This review will be the most comprehensive modernisation of the co-operative sector for a generation, with the potential to establish a more modern and supportive business environment that facilitates growth.

To achieve this, your input is needed.

How can you be part of the review process?

We are committed to ensuring our members have the opportunity to inform and participate in the review.

As part of this process, we are inviting our Federal and Partner members to attend a virtual round table to discuss strategic objectives for improving co-operative law.

The virtual round table will be held via Zoom on Friday 10 November from 12.30-1.30pm.

We need to make the most of this opportunity and ensure the views of the co-operative movement are reflected in the review.
